Taipei is served by two airports:
Taoyuan International Airport (TPE): This airport serves the capital city Taipei and the northern parts of Taiwan. The airport is located about 40 km west of Taipei in Dayuan District, Taoyuan. TPE has two passenger terminals. There are several ways to reach the city for every budget:
Taiwan Railway costs TWD $95 (₪11). The ride takes 90 minutes, and the fare includes transfers. The bus costs $125 (₪14.50), and the duration of the ride is 55 minutes. Airport MRT will bring you to the city center in 35-45 minutes for $160 (₪18.50), and the high-speed rail will bring you in 45 minutes for $195 (₪22.60). Alternatively, you can take a cab. Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA): This is a smaller airport located in Songshan. It handles domestic flights in Taiwan, and also to and from China, South Korea, and Japan. You can reach the city by the Taipei Metro Neihu Line. Several city buses stop here, providing frequent links to the Tamsui Line and Wenshan Line of the Taipei Metro. When to go to Taipei?
The temperatures in Taipei are rarely the problem. From June to September it’s mostly above 30, but it can pour rain. January and February are colder, with 18 degrees during the day, but much less rain. May and October offer pleasant temperatures of 26 degrees. However, May is quite rainy. In an average October you will get half of the rain compared to May, so search cheap flights to Taipei during October-November. In any case, pack your umbrella with you.
What to see and do in Taipei?
Use Taipei 101 skyscraper to get your bearings when you arrive in the city - its blend of contemporary architecture and allusions to traditional bamboo structures stands head and shoulders above the skyline. When it was completed in 2011, it was the world's tallest building. Zoom up to the Observatory on the 89th floor, via the breakneck-speed elevator, to admire the finest view in Taipei.
Clamber up the stone steps winding up Elephant Mountain for the best photos of Taipei 101, and visit the stunning National Palace Museum. It is filled with the world’s largest collection of Chinese art. Taiwan’s hot springs are not to be missed, and there are plenty of volcanic hills surrounding Taipei providing prime geothermal territory. The neighborhood of Beitou is one of the best places to dive in, the onsen style bathhouses and tea gardens here a legacy from Japanese occupation.
