The capital of the province of Gelderland, Arnhem has a rich and eventful past, partly reflected in a number of monumental buildings. Set in the heart of green surroundings, the town is contained by the Veluwe on one side and the forelands on the other. The Church One architectural highlight in Arnhem is the Grote Kerk or Eusebius Church with its 93 metre tower. Construction work started in 1450; the church took over a century to complete. It was designed in the Nether Rhine Gothic style of the cathedral in the German village of Xanten. Unique carillon The Eusebius Church is a three-aisle cruciform basilica with an extraordinary carillon, which boasts one of the heaviest carillon bells in Holland. There is only one other bell that is heavier. The Reformation occurred in Arnhem in 1578. The church was taken over by the reformed church at that time. Restoration The church was heavily damaged during the battle of Arnhem in WWII. After the war it was fully restored and more restoration work has been done since that time. Today the church is a much-loved exhibition space, with services held only once per month. Address: Kerkplein 1, Arnhem.

ARNHEM Arnhem is a pleasant town worth a quick look. Its pedestrianised centre around the well-hidden Korenmarkt is a five-minute walk from the station- head down to the Utrechtsestraat, cross over Willemsplein and cut through Korenstraat. Arnhem was the site of fierce fighting in 1944 between the Germans and Allied airborne troops during the failed Operation Market Garden.

Arnhem, capital of Gelderland (province), located to the east of The Netherlands. A city with a fashion district, a railway station that took 20 years to build and the most beautiful park of The Netherlands. Home to THE bridge from the movie “A Bridge Too Far”, WW2 took a big hit on Arnhem, the memory is still very much alive. Forget about Amsterdam, come and visit Arnhem! Take a look at www.ArnhemLife.com for more info.
