Terminal Information - Departing
All flights from Tel Aviv to Philadelphia depart from Ben Gurion Airport. Most flights take off from Terminal 3, but if your first leg is operated by a low-cost airline, it may depart from Terminal 1. There are Duty-Free stores, cafes, and restaurants in both terminals. Ben Gurion Airport offers a large variety of clothing stores, as well as electronics, books, candy local and international wines. You can buy electronics and gadget which are part of the outstanding $200 tax-free sale, and store it for no extra fee until you return to Israel.
Free Wi-Fi is offered in all areas of the terminals including the gates, so you can answer your emails and post on social media until you have to board the plane. If you have premium credit cards, consider visiting any of the two Dan Lounges, either for free or for a massive discount. Here you can enjoy complimentary soft drinks, beers, wines, and snacks.
Terminal Information - Arriving
Flights from Tel Aviv to Philadelphia arrive at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), regardless of how many stopovers you had or where. One of the most convenient ways to get to the city is the regional train, which runs every 30 minutes. There are stations on Terminal E/F, Terminal C/D, Terminal B, Terminal A (East), Eastwick, University City, 30th Street, and three Center City stations along Market Street," includes 30th Street, along with Suburban Station and Jefferson Station. One-way fare to Center City is $6.50; or $8.50 to any other station beyond Center City.
There are also three bus routes: Route 37 to South Philadelphia and Chester, Pa.; Route 108 to 69th Street Transportation Center; Route 115 to Suburban Square in Ardmore. Single ride fare is $2.25 and transfers are available onboard buses for an additional $1.00.
Alternatively, you can take a taxi to the Philadelphia metro area and surrounding counties. There is a $28.50 flat-rate charge to Center City Philadelphia.
Things you should know
Before you book flights from Tel Aviv to Philadelphia, you must have a visa stamped into your passport. Israeli citizens must apply online via the website of the American Embassy. You will be called for a personal interview. The visitors' visa is valid for up to 10 years, but you can stay no more than 90 days on each visit. This process takes time, so it’s recommended to wait before you purchase the ticket until after your application has been approved.
Some European nationalities are exempted from this procedure, so if you have a foreign passport check if it’s part of the Visa Waiver Program. Philadelphia is on the East Coast time, so it’s seven hours behind Tel Aviv. When the time in Israel is 12:00, in Pennsylvania it’s 5:00. The winters are cold with temperatures sinking below 0 degrees at night. July and August are warm, with more than 30 degrees during the daytime.
Transportation is a bit more costly than in Israel: one-way ticket costs $2.25, and each km of a taxi ride costs $1.43, that’s 32% more than the ₪5 you pay in Tel Aviv. A three-course meal in a mid-range restaurant for two costs $60, which is similar to what you pay in Israel. Beers are much cheaper, 25%-50% less than the prices you are used to at home. Save some space in your suitcase for shopping: you will find your favorite brands for up to 60% cheaper compared to Israel, and many products and models that are not available in Tel Aviv. Note that in the US the prices are shown before state tax is added.
