Had I not had to pass through Logrono so quickly on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, I would have lingered to taste the regions most famous contribution, La Riojo wine, known for its fine quality and strength.

The biggest city in La Rioja region, lives around the Wine and tapas culture. The 2 major streets not to miss: calle Laurel and calle San Juan. Other major attraction: the cathedral and other interesting buildings And churches throughout the city. It's also part of the French route of Santiago, so several Albergues and pilgrims info are to be found in the city.

Gayle and I only passed through Logroño during our recent trip to Spain. We were on our way from Santo Domingo de la Calzada to Laguardia and missed the turn off at Fuentemayor. There were harsh words spoken, but we finally found our way and forgave each other after the fight. Even during the best of trips, there can be conflict. Yet as long as we were in the area: Logroño is located in the northern region of La Rioja and on the river Ebro. The Camino de Santiago also passes through the city. Logroño was an old settlement, first of the Romans, under the name of Vareia, a commercial port, and then of the Celts. From the 10th century, possession of Logroño was disputed between the kings of Navarre and those of Castile; the region was finally annexed to Castile. Alfonso VI of Castile granted Logroño in 1095 a charter of rights that served as a model for other Spanish cities. In 1609 and 1610 Logroño was the main seat of the Basque witch trials, part of the Spanish Inquisition. Logroño now is the shopping and financial capital of La Rioja. Its economy is heavily reliant on wine. Logroño has has a distinguished culinary tradition.
