Virgin Atlantic has come a long way since its maiden flight from London Gatwick to Newark on June 22nd, 1984, which was operated by a leased Jumbo (Boeing 747-200). It is, today, the second largest British carrier. It became famous thanks to its sassy founder Sir Richard Branson.

How to Check In

You can check yourself in online or on your mobile from 24 hours to 70 minutes prior to your flight. ou will be able to select your seat at this time. If you are departing from airports in London, Manchester, New York or San Diego, you can use the self-check-in kiosks starting 2.5 hours before departing. If you depart from Gatwick and have an early morning flight, you can arrive at the airport with all of your documents the evening before between 17:00-21:00 to drop off your luggage. If you select this option you can arrive at the airport just 50 minutes before departure.

Baggage Allowances and Fees

Virgin Atlantic has a generous checked luggage allowance. Economy passengers can check two items up to 23 kg each, Premium Economy passengers up to three items of 23 kg each, and Upper Class passengers three items of up to 32 kg each. The maximum permitted size of each bag is 90x75x43. If you need an extra allowance you can purchase it; the first extra bag costs $100 and any additional costs $200. For an overweight bag (23-32 kg) you will pay $100 and for an oversized one $60. In addition to your checked allowance, you can board the plane with one carry-on item if your fare is Economy or Premium Economy. The maximum weight is 10 kg. Upper Class passengers can carry two items with a combined weight of 16 kg, but each single item must not exceed 12 kg. A personal item such a laptop or a handbag is also allowed.

Seating

The seat pitch in Economy Class is quite average, with 79 cm between your seat and the seat in front of you. In Premium Economy you can really stretch your legs with 96.5 cm legroom. All Upper Class seats have flat-beds, and on the Airbus A330-300, you will have your own suite. Virgin Atlantic allows you to select your seat for free when you fly Economy, but you can also reserve your seat in advance as early as 331 days before your flight, starting at $45 for a standard seat, $55 for an extra legroom seat, and $70 for an emergency exit seat.

There are no booking or credit card fees when you book Virgin Atlantic flights.

Service on Board

Virgin Atlantic offers free meals and drinks during the flight even for Economy Class passengers. An in-flight entertainment system is available for you to pass the time, with hundreds of movies, TV shows, music channels and video games to choose from. You will also get a toothbrush, an eye mask, a blanket and a warm hand towel. Upper Class passengers can have a drink and walk around in complimentary slippers. Power sockets are available for your laptop in all Upper Class seats, as well as in Premium Economy.
